All contemporary computing systems have a concept of file sharing. As the mobile and cloudiness and hyper-connectedness of computing evolves, even more things are being shared. But does anyone give much thought to WHAT is shared and HOW and WHY and WHEN?

In a virtualized world, there are more things to share.

Sharing filesystems is easy. If you have concerns, this presentation will help you.

Sharing key operating system components is highly productive. This presentation will outline what components are effectively shared. This presentation will discuss how shared operating system components can be MAINTAINED without a lot of pain or wringing the hands and how it is more reliable, serviceable, scalable, and secure.

Concepts like read-only root will be discussed. (But that is not the only way to share.) The requirements laid on package managers (such as RPM) will be reviewed.

This presentation will focus on some of the errors commonly made in z/VM and Linux on System z including system and networking environments and how to avoid them. Description: Many people have heard about the System z Personal Development Tool (zPDT) that allows users to run System z operating systems and programs on Intel (x86-64) architecture machines (servers and laptops). Until very recently this technology was only available to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) developing software products to run on System z. With the recent introduction of Rational Develop & Test (RD&T) zPDt has been made available to a much larger audience of potential users. Mike Hammock has been a recognized leader in b‚small mainframeb technology since the early days of the P/390, including extensive experience with FLEX-ES and now zPDT. He will provide a brief introduction to zPDT: how it works, what you can do with it, and how it performs. That will be followed by a discussion of zPDT and RD&T and who can make use of each and the licensing differences. Time permitting, Mike will provide a brief live demonstration. If you have an interest in developing almost any kind of software on System z, or just like the idea of running z/VM on your laptop or Intel server, you should attend this session.

Description: Recently we had to create a way to execute a huge number of repetitive execution tasks involving multiple steps and return the output of the jobs to a VM userid. We wanted to use Linux guests as the batch execution environment because Linux had a number of "slice and dice" tools that made the overall job much simpler.

This session describes how we set up a group of Linux systems as a batch compute farm using open-source batch queueing and management software, and some locally developed scripting to submit the jobs and route the output. It describes the technical setup, discusses ways that one can use this approach to offload CPU-intensive tasks to cheaper resources, and opens up some interesting uses for controlled execution environments for VM and z/OS users.
